ONLY TOTAL AFTER DARK

Forming an unexpected theme this Friday, Only Total’s meandering single ‘After Dark’ takes us through the process of accepting the fact that you’ve fallen for someone, despite not meaning nor wanting to. The musician behind the moniker, Milo McNulty, formulates these invasive feelings into slow drumbeats and mellow piano playing. There’s certainly a flavour of ‘80s pop, thinking particularly of Tears For Fears with their keys, synths and throaty vocal tones, which we hear from McNulty intermittently alongside those higher alto verses. There’s nothing too complicated about ‘After Dark’, although in its directness and simplicity, we find a refined character. - Hannah Thacker
